Free listings in return for a reciprocal link from your site to the directory where you are listed, look attractive.
However, just trying to do this a few times, reveals that a lot of directories abuse this system to try to get links to their site, without actually doing anything in return. Our experience tells us that only about 20-25 % of directories will keep their promise.
Since one has to edit a webpage, then upload the changed file, it is rather dubious that this is a worthy effort.
Free listings are more straighforward, and except for filling out the forms, there is no additional work involved in changing your own web pages or uploading files. If your site is not actually listed, well, bad luck, but at least you did not really waste a lot of time and effort. To be honest, even with paid inclusions, we found a few directories that do not list you in a timely manner (we are still waiting for some listings, despite having paid the fees).
For the record, below are a few directories that list your website (at least our websites) in a timely manner, in return for a a reciprocal link, and some more that did not respond as expected.
